All You Ever Get

When you’ve got history nothing can ever be
just the way it is
When your light is cast through a lens of the past
the view is distorted
When you’re a long way from home and
all you’ve ever known
Is one more f*ing thing that’s gone
You find all you ever get

Is another sob story repeating itself
is another fine mess made with somebody else
Is a new scenic picture, now ripped in half
is a broken addiction –
What you needed so bad
Is one more to chalk up to yesterday
is one more reason to run away

But when you’re frozen in place, by mistakes you’ve made
there’s no fighting chance
When you’ve tried to flee, but your worst enemy
is your own advance
When you’re tired of being all alone, and sentiment is
the twighlight zone
And you swear your heart is made of stone
You find all you ever get

Is another pretender with ill-intent
is another big spender when you’re already spent
Is a new dance partner in a masquerade
is the next candy-flinger along a parade
Is one truth bender after the next
is one to remember you’d rather forget

So when you can’t move forward and you can’t go back
When you can’t get away and you’re on the wrong track
When you want to fly up but you’re stuck on the ground
When you want to be right but there’s no one around
You find all you ever get

Is another sob story repeating itself
is another fine mess with somebody else
Is a new scenic picture, now ripped in half
is a broken addiction –
What you needed so bad
Is one more to chalk up to yesterday
is one more reason to run away

Until you wake up one morning full of regret
And you realize that’s all you ever get
